DO NOT GET ME WRONG
THIS GAME IS AMAZING
Extremely tight mechanics, feels good to play, lots of tools that make it a very high skilled fighter with tons of mental games. And unlike a lot of modern games zoners are good! It plays (imo) more like a street fighter with a side step than anything else.
The game has so much charm and its fun to just watch. So what makes me not recommend this?
The online, the netcode, is unplayable.
The only time you will get a game not played through microsoft powerpoint is when you both have 3 bars and are close enough, and even then sometimes you get awful packet loss which makes the game worse than powerpoint even in ideal conditions. Delay based netcode is what killed this games playerbase, at the moment the most serious players play this game emulated on parsec and I DO NOT BLAME THEM. The online is so miserable that you can't fathom of getting good without third party tools.
To put this into context, the game went from 3.5k players on launch, to 1.3k two weeks later (not bad) to BARELY 300 ACTIVE PLAYERS AT THIS VERY MOMENT (via steam charts). Compare this to how many people play Strive which to this day has solid 2.5k peaks. Compare this to MELEE, which needs THIRD PARTY NETCODE AND LAUNCHERS TO HAVE GOOD ONLINE. And THAT game has even more active players than GGStrive. So what makes these games survive? Rollback netcode, it is so important to a fighter nowadays because we don't live in the ps2 era of fighters anymore, in that era your fighter had a ton of single player content that made your game playable even solo. Think of Soul Caliber 3's RTS gamemode, no fighter has anything like this nowadays, not even smash. And this game, unsurprisingly, and disappointingly, is no different. It lacks tons of single player content that could potentially excuse bad netcode but it does not. Instead it has unplayable powerpoint games between two people flailing their arms about.
The worst part about that is this game is sick! It feels amazing to play! You feel like a monster when you start to get good at the game. It has amazing offensive and defensive mechanics, it has a ton of creativity, and it all falls flat because people can't play the game online. If you do get this game, expect to either never get any games, have friends who play it offline with you, or get ready to learn how to use PARSEC. Because otherwise you WILL NOT GET ANY GAMES WORTH A DAMN. Especially with this dead playerbase, a death sentence for a fighter whose biggest draw (after the IP) is fighting other people.
If this game ever gets rollback, OH BOY. But as of right now I cannot in good conscience recommend this game unless you absolutely NEED more JoJo before part 9 comes out, you are a serious competitor and are willing to jump through hoops, or have friends locally to play with. Which is an absolute shame.

peak player count ~5000
24 peak ~390
it's super hard to find a game online, and when I do the netcode is so trash it's unplayable
fun game but idk how they're going to release all this dlc and expect to make a big profit if they literally refuse to patch their netcode and make the UI better. there's so many annoying little things about the UI it's unreal, the worst thing is being forced back to the online menu after a single ranked match, which are always best of 1

I would like to recommend this game, but I really can't.
Pros:
-It's Jojo.
Cons:
-The developers have said there is no plan to add rollback, making online virtually unplayable
-The game does not teach the player its mechanics, you have to read about them yourself.
-There is no mode that will teach the player combos, there is a mechanic that allows you to spam Light Attack and it will do a combo for you, but they are very lackluster compared to what can be done if you learn a combo in the lab.
This game is not worth $50. The netcode is garbage and there is no way to learn combos, There has already been a significant drop in the player base to the point where it is impossible to find a match anymore.
